Dietary Choices Impact Gut Health

By Heide Kennedy, Arizona Farm Bureau Communications Intern

Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet along with meat proteins, dairy, eggs and nuts.

We all know the phrase “Garbage in, garbage out.” In other words, if what you’re putting in is bad, then the outcome will also be bad. This can be especially true when it comes to food and what we are putting into our bodies. If we love to enjoy junk food and eat it in large quantities, our health probably won’t be the best. Or, if we want to live long, healthy lives, then we have to make sure that we are getting good, nutritious foods in our diets. The choice is ultimately ours.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, one of the main players in determining our health is our guts. Our guts are responsible for so many of our body’s functions that keep it healthy and thriving. Our gut microbiome, which is all of the bacteria that live there to digest foods have to be kept healthy and within a correct balance to keep us feeling our best and to help prevent future health issues.

According to a review article, what you eat plays a big role in determining your gut health. Specifically, the article noted that eating high amounts of fat, fiber, cholesterol, emulsifiers, sodium, and simple carbs really takes a toll on your gut microbiome. Unfortunately, the typical Western diet that many of us eat is very high in many of these, such as saturated fat, sugar, sodium, simple carbos, and cholesterol.

Following and sticking to a healthier diet is the best way to improve and continue to support your gut’s health. While there are many different diet plans that you could choose from, simply just cutting back on junk foods and making healthful swaps in your current diet is also a step in the right direction! A Prescription for Produce

By Heide Kennedy, Arizona Farm Bureau Communications Intern

When you go to the doctor for a chronic illness, what often ends up happening is your doctor will prescribe you with a medication that is meant to help reduce the symptoms of or help to heal whatever the condition may be. While medication does do a lot of good, sometimes a diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables can help to improve a patient’s condition as well.

Registered dietician Mackenzie Sachs says that when a chronic illness such as high blood pressure or diabetes, her first recommendation isn’t usually medication, rather, its more fruit and vegetables in that patient’s diet. She says that the increased amounts of fiber, vitamins, and minerals that her patients receive through their diet after adding more fruits and vegetables has significantly improved their health.

Family nurse practitioner Brittany Coburn says, “Real food matters and increasing fruits and veggies can reverse some forms of diabetes, eliminate elevated cholesterol, and impact blood pressure in a positive way.” Sachs acknowledges that for some conditions, especially those that are irreversible, medication is still necessary. However, it never hurts to eat a healthy diet as well!

Small Amounts of Stress Can be Beneficial

By Heide Kennedy, Arizona Farm Bureau Communications Intern

We often hear that stress is a bad thing. Often, this is true, as it takes a toll on our bodies and overall health, and if it is extreme and consistent it can lead to premature cell damage and the development of certain conditions. But did you know that certain short-term stress can actually be very healthy for us?

Food Stress

According to health psychologist and longevity researcher Elissa Epel, incorporating “stress fitness,” or short bursts of stress, can improve the health and life span of your cells rather than wearing them out. She says that by doing so, you will essentially be training your body to be more resilient to stress in the future.

These bursts of stress fitness don’t have to be very long or intense. Epel offers the following suggestions for incorporating some into your weekly routine.

  • High-intensity interval training
  • Cold showers
  • Sauna sessions

So while chronic stress can be damaging to your body, a little stress every now and then is good to help your body tolerate stress better down the road.

Do Your Shopping at Your Local Farmer’s Market!

By Heide Kennedy, Arizona Farm Bureau Communications Intern

Finally, the weather here in Arizona feels like it is cooling down into more bearable temperatures. This means that it’s beginning to be the perfect weather for lots of fun, outdoor activities such as exploring some local farmers’ markets!

Don’t miss these facts about our local Arizona Farmer’s Markets (photo credit: BigStockPhoto.com)

Ever since my little brother began selling the raw honey he produces from his bees at local farmer’s markets, my interest in them has definitely increased! Here are my three favorite things about local farmer’s markets!

Supports small businesses.

Most of the participants at farmer’s markets are all individuals who own their own small businesses and are trying to sell products and build a consumer following. I’ve personally seen how successful this can be after watching my brother start by only selling honey to a few family members and friends, becoming one of the most popular, sought-after booths at the farmer’s market here in town! So, by shopping there, not only are you helping people grow their businesses, but you are also likely to get higher quality products than what you can get at a store.

It’s a good outdoor activity.

If you’re anything like me, there is nothing more miserable than just sitting in the house all day. I would much rather get outside and get moving! Walking around a farmer’s market is a great way to get out in the fresh air, get some movement in, and get some of your weekly shopping out of the way! Additionally, it allows you to socialize and network with all the different people that set up vendors or shops there!
