We don’t get rain in Arizona very often, but when it rains, it pours! On a rainy day, the question is always, “What can I do today?”. Lucky for you, we have a whole list of fun activities and miscellaneous tasks that will keep you busy and focused on something other than the rain! Check them out below.
Exercise
It’s always hard to get out and exercise when it’s raining, especially if you like to exercise outdoors by running, hiking, biking, etc. Try these ideas instead:
• Go to the gym.
• If you have a home gym, use it!
• Try out a home workout video from Planet Fitness (requires no equipment!).
• Try out a home yoga video from Yoga With Adriene.
• If you have stairs, incorporate them in your workout.
• Play any video games you have that require movement (like Just Dance on the Wii or Beat Sabers or Acron on the Oculus in VR).
Fun
Don’t just sit around and nap all day! Do something fun with your family and make some memories. Try these ideas:
• Make a blanket fort – this was one of my favorite things to do as a little kid. It’s still fun when you’re older if you set it up in front of a movie!
• Have a movie night – make popcorn, grab some sodas and candy and put on a new show or one of your favorites.
• Board games – bring out all of your board and card games and have fun playing with your family! Some of my favorites are Apples to Apples, Secret Hitler, Cover Your Assets, and Quelf.
• Do a DIY project – Whether you’re looking to make a fun craft or something that lasts, we’ve got you covered. Check out some of Fill Your Plate’s ideas for DIY projects in the articles linked here.
• Make an ice cream or hot chocolate bar – Put together all your favorite ingredients and toppings and watch a movie while you enjoy your ice cream or hot chocolate! See here for Fill Your Plate’s article on How to Make an Easy, Fancy, and Delicious Hot Chocolate Bar.
Food
It can be easy to feel lazy on a rainy day and not want to cook… which is totally fine! Check out these ideas for rainy day meals and snacks:
• Make a charcuterie board and graze on these snacks throughout the day. Don’t forget to put it back in the fridge in between bites!
• Order food for delivery through DoorDash, Postmates, UberEats, or another food delivery app. My favorite rainy day foods are Chinese food and soups.
• You can also get groceries delivered via Instacart if you don’t feel like running to the grocery store.
• If you are stocked up on groceries, try doing some meal prep to get ahead for the week. It takes up time, you won’t have to make meals later, and you can get your family to do it with you. Try some of the recipes from Fill Your Plate’s meal prep articles, found here.
• Make your ideal comfort food, whatever it is – homemade macaroni and cheese, bacon, broccoli and potato soup, or homemade spaghetti or pasta with pink sauce with melted cheese on top are my favorites! Homemade pizza is another fun one that makes a great family activity too!
