Halloween will be here soon, which means stocking up on candy, setting out the creepy decorations, and my favorite: dressing up in costumes! Even though my days of trick-or-treating have long passed, I still like to put on a costume every year and pass out candy to the little ones in my neighborhood. After all the kids have come and gone, I have my friends over to watch spooky movies all night, and snack on some Halloween-themed treats.
These snacks, easily made by anyone, are always a huge hit. They are great for any Halloween party. Some treats can be wrapped in pretty fall bags and given to friends and family, or you can just make them as a fun treat for yourself on Halloween!
Pumpkin Pretzels
Grab a bag of mini pretzels, a bag of white chocolate chips, some orange food coloring, and a bag of M&Ms.
Melt the white chocolate chips (thin out with shortening or coconut oil if needed), and add orange food coloring to make it look like the color of a pumpkin. Dip your pretzels into the chocolate, and then lay on a flat surface (like a baking pan) to solidify. Right after you put the chocolate-covered pretzel down, add a green M&M, make sure it’s facing sideways, to look like a stem.
Frankenstein Crispy Treats
You’re going to need a box of Rice Krispie cereal, 4 cups of mini marshmallows, ¼ cup butter, green food coloring, a bag of milk chocolate chips, and candy eyes.
First, make the crispy treats! Melt ¼ a cup of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add 4 cups of mini marshmallows and stir until they are melted and combined with the butter. Now add some green food coloring and stir until the mixture is all one, even color. Add the cereal and mix! mix! mix! so everything combines thoroughly. Press the treat mixture into a buttered cookie sheet, and let sit until it is cool.
When everything has cooled, cut the treats into squares. Now melt the milk chocolate chips, and dip the tops of the treats into the chocolate to represent the monster’s hair. Use a little bit of the same melted chocolate to glue on the little candy eyes. After you’ve finished dipping the treats and gluing on the eyes, fill a plastic sandwich bag with the rest of the melted chocolate. Snip the end off of the bag and pipe on a stitched mouth. Let the chocolate harden, and your treats are done!
Spider Web Sugar Cookie Cake
You’ll need premade cookie dough (enough to cover a round baking sheet), a bag of milk chocolate chips.
To start, press the cookie dough onto a greased, round baking sheet (I use the same baking sheet I use for pizza) and bake according to the directions on the packaging. Let your cookie cake cool when it’s done. Once it is cool, melt the chocolate chips, and put the now melted chocolate into a plastic sandwich bag and snip the corner off. Begin piping on the cake in a spider web pattern. The whole cake should look like one giant spider web when you are done. Now go back and pipe on little spiders here and there. You can even attach M&Ms with a little chocolate, and use them as the spider’s body. Just add a few legs and you’ve got some very colorful spiders.
Mummy Twinkies
This is super simple! All you need is a box of Twinkies, a bag of white chocolate chips, and candy eyes.
Melt the white chocolate chips, and unwrap the Twinkies. Dip the Twinkies in the melted white chocolate and set on wax paper, a cookie sheet, or a plate to dry. Before the chocolate is solidified, place two candy eyes on each Twinkie. Take the rest of the white chocolate and put in in a plastic sandwich bag. Cut the corner of the bag off, and drizzle the white chocolate over the Twinkies so that it looks like bandages on a mummy!
All of these treats are simple and won’t break your bank. Chances are they will really please your guests, too. Remember to check Filllyourplate.org for more fall and Halloween blogs, there are sure to be plenty this season!
