Humility

Humility

Jim Goldman, Pinal County Dairy Farmer

Humility is a trait; the true meaning of, is often times confused,
Visions of timidity, docility, weakness, submission fill our minds,
Rightfully and sternly refused.

Successful self-reliant, independent are qualities to seek and admire.
Humility, meekness, patience forbearing unassuming are for others to endure,
But not our desire.

Ambition seeks to amass a fortune, buy prestige, grasp power;
To leave the family a suitable legacy.
Priorities denied, yet plainly our conduct reveals a contrary reality.

Remembered, honored, names engraved, achievements recorded,
Lasting fame too readily becomes our goal.
Fleeting prizes to be forgotten in a generation,
Burned on the trash heap of time to ashes and charcoal.

Leaders of valor, who move men and ideas learned long ago,
Recognizing the worth of others is the key to lasting fame,
Not feeding a self-centered ego.

For it’s not bluntness or lack of friendly pleasantries we so much deride,
But vanity and self-pride.
For those claiming to be superior
Have merely allowed their brains to drop to their posterior.

Earth bemoans the plentiful supply of lordly savants
While yearning in need of more selfless servants.
Ones who encourage us when we’re down,
Rather then remind us of their renown.

And ones who suppose money and fame
Have earned eternal glory
Are not rewarded at the end of the story.
Only humble, faith and trust venture into divine territory.

For to admit you are nor the final boss
Is where humility finds a start; vanity a loss
And truth be found not in pride
But upon a cruel cross.
