One of the best things about living in Arizona is the almost year-round
availability of freshly grown produce and other farm products. Unlike much of the rest of the country, Arizona farms can operate in all four seasons. This means that as winter sets in and folks in other states are closing up their farmer’s markets and packing up their produce stands, many of ours remain open.
During December, you can easily find in season produce like clementines, carrots, sweet potatoes, lemons, and spinach. January and February bring celery, strawberries, and garlic and the winter season wraps up in March with fresh asparagus and zucchini blossoms. You can get these items at your local farmer’s market long before farmers in other states have even started their seeds. For a full list of what is in season during the winter months, check the list of Arizona Produce in Season on Fill Your Plate.
In a recent edition of FoodieNews, the American Farm Bureau talked about the prevalence of farmer’s markets across the country. As consumer demand for local produce and farm products has increased, more and more locations have opened. This is a great opportunity for new farmers to increase their connections and revenue but also offers those in food deserts more access to healthy food options. To listen to the report, click here.
