Taking folic acid supplements while pregnant has always been important to a healthy pregnancy. But, a new study gives more credence to the medical community’s encouragement of this supplement.
A study in BMC Medicine found that children whose mothers used folic acid supplements during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy exhibited greater processing speed at age 11, compared with the placebo group.
The findings, based on data involving 119 mother-child pairs in the UK, also showed that folic acid supplementation in later pregnancy was associated with stronger verbal comprehension skills among females.
