National Breakfast Month: How to get your kids to eat breakfast

September is National Breakfast month so we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight what is considered to be the most important meal of the day.  Did you know that it’s been shown that children who eat a healthy breakfast perform better in school than children who skip breakfast?  The fact is that having breakfast provides both children and adults with the energy they need to get through the day.

But how do you get your kids to eat breakfast?  While the morning rush to get everyone out of the house makes it tempting to just skip it as everyone dashes out the door, probably the best way to get your kids to eat breakfast is to set a good breakfast-eating example yourself.  For a quick and easy breakfast, grab a piece of fruit in season.  Also, cereal is now available in more healthy options than ever.  Make certain the cereal is loaded with whole grains  rather than sugar, and cereals with ingredients like almonds and oatmeal can provide much needed protein which is known to boost energy throughout the day. And of course, don’t forget the milk.  Milk provides vital nutrients such as Vitamin D, and Calcium, which help children’s bodies grow healthy.

There are many breakfast options  you can prepare and then pop in the oven while everyone is getting up and dressed for work and school such as Arizona Quiche or  Chili Egg Puff ,  why not try a scrambled egg and veggie breakfast wrap? Microwave eggs and the fresh Arizona grown vegetables of your choice, wrap them in a soft tortilla, sprinkle with cheese if you want, wrap and go!

Here are some more quick and easy breakfast ideas:

  • Whole wheat bagel topped with peanut butter and sliced fruit.
  •  Bran or other fruit muffins baked the night before.
  • Prepare a casserole  or quiche  the night before.
  •  Frozen, toaster waffles.
  •  Eggs – microwave for a wrap, or hard boiled and eaten on the way .. Did you know you could make scrambled eggs in the microwave  in a sandwich bag?
  •  Fruit smoothies made with low-fat yogurt are a great way to incorporate fruit and dairy into the morning rush.

Breakfast is a meal that can be eaten any time and is as good to eat as it is good for you.  So what are you waiting for?  Let’s eat breakfast!
